Reflections on My Spiritual Birthday
Today is my spiritual birthday, the anniversary of the day I gave my life to Christ. I haven’t always celebrated it, especially when I was younger, but the farther I journey through life with Him, the more I enjoy reflecting and celebrating with Him, special occasion or not.
This year, I spent some time journaling and reflecting back on the past seven years. I’ve had quite a few big changes over those seven years, and while they contained some high points, they also contained more low points than I’ve ever experienced.
Yet as I journaled, writing a little summary of each year’s events and lessons learned, I realized that the really big spiritual breakthroughs I’d had occurred over the past two years, and when I thought about it, I realized that without the previous five long, hard years, none of that growth would’ve taken place. I wouldn’t be nearly as close to the Lord or as grounded in my faith as I am today if I hadn’t had to walk through so many tests and trials.
These last few years have been my “spiritual coming of age” as Beth Moore calls it, and as painful and challenging as they’ve been, I wouldn’t have skipped them for anything if it meant having to lose the closeness I have with Him now.
Seeing all of this as I journaled obviously led me to acknowledge His faithfulness to me over the years. That’s one of my favorite exercises, by the way, especially whenever my faith is feeling weak, to look back over my life or certain seasons of my life and to specifically identify ways He showed Himself faithful during hard times.
It’s wonderful to be starting a new year of life with Him, and I’m especially more grateful than ever for His love for me and His faithfulness to me as we begin the next leg of the journey together.
Here’s a passage I’m meditating on as I celebrate my spiritual birthday and His faithfulness to me:
“I give you thanks, O Lord, with all my heart;
I will sing your praises before the gods.
I bow before your holy Temple as I worship.
I praise your name for your unfailing love and faithfulness;
for your promises are backed
by all the honor of your name.
As soon as I pray, you answer me;
you encourage me by giving me strength.
The Lord will work out his plans for my life—
for your faithful love, O Lord, endures forever.”
-Psalm 138:1-3, 8a (NLT)
