My Top 5 Books of 2021

It’s time to share my favorite reads from the past year!

This year and last year, I committed to read books that I already had on my shelves and to keep purchasing new books to a minimum.  I found myself eyeing new books and realized that I already have so many that I’ve never read or that I haven’t read in a long time, so I’ve been working my way through many of them for the past two years.

Here are my five favorite books I read in 2021:

Transforming Grace: Living Confidently in God’s Unfailing Love

Jerry Bridges

This was one of my top two favorite reads for this year. My word for 2021 was “grace,” and this book helped me understand the beauty, the power, and the responsibility of being a recipient of God’s transforming grace. It’s especially helpful if you come from a legalistic background and are looking for a balanced, Biblical perspective on grace.

The Power of Prayer in a Believer’s Life

Charles Spurgeon

This is the other book in my top two, and I’m totally surprised it is because I wasn’t expecting a book on prayer that’s been sitting unread on my shelf for years to blow me away as much as this one did. I’ve already written about it here, but this book made me actually want to put it down and pray on the spot. It’s covered in underlining and stars and notes to myself, and in fact, I loved it so much, it’s on my “re-read on a regular basis” list.

Handle with Prayer

Charles Stanley

This book has become another favorite on prayer. Dr. Stanley answered a lot of the questions I’d had about prayer, as well as some questions I didn’t even realize I’d had until I got into the book. He covers the topic of prayer in an encouraging way that exhorts the reader to pray deeper, more expectant prayers. (I’ve reviewed this book here.)

The Fruitful Life

Jerry Bridges

I went through this book with a friend of mine, and we both got so much out of it.  It’s a study on the Fruit of the Spirit, but it goes deeper than other books or studies I’ve read on this subject.  I really appreciate that a reflection guide is included to give the reader pause to reflect on what’s been learned and to recognize ways to apply what God’s revealed.

The Grace and Truth Paradox: Responding with Christlike Balance

Randy Alcorn

This book is a timely and quick read. How do we communicate grace and truth as we live the Gospel? Using Scripture, Alcorn points to Jesus as the perfect example of living a life of grace while upholding truth. It’s one every Christian should read, especially in times like these.
